The Camera Bag

The Camera Bag

I understand it's more traditional to do this via youtube video, but I haven't got batteries for my Bridge camera, so there's no video recording available to me bar my iSight.

Okay, so I use a Nikon D60. It's a budget DSLR, but with a metal mount, decent viewfinder and a nice low resolution of 10.2mpx (6mpx would be better, but I didn't know about the D70 when I bought it.) I shoot all-manual, which explains my kitbag.

From the left:
~ Nikon Series E 50mm F1.8. It's a fast 'standard' lens from Nikon's low end cameras in the 70's, which naturally outperforms pretty much every other lens they do, like all 50mm F1.8's do. It's a pancake lens, really tiny when mounted on the D60. I prefer the 75mm effective to 50mm effective, for some reason, hence not using a 35mm as a 'standard'.
~ Tamron Adaptall2 24mm F2.5. It's a fastish wide angle, equivalent to a 35mm on a full frame camera. It's got great optical performance, albeit a little low contrast in some lights. It's biggest flaw is flare, which is a shame since I can't find a hood for it. It remains an excellent always-on lens, nonetheless and is fast enough for most environments.
~ Tamron Adaptall2 SP 90mm F2.5 Macro. This has equal quality to the 50mm and fantastic macro performance, being known as one of the best Macro lenses of the film era. It's also a good portrait and telephoto lens, being a 135mm effective length on my D60.
~ Tamron Adaptall2 80-210mm F3.8-F4. This is a stupidly good lens, probably the best zoom lens of the Adaptall range, and then only beaten by the 90mm F2.5 SP. This is at the bottom of a side pocket. I don't use it often, but for wildlife shots and action, it's not half bad for the ?29 I paid for it.

I also have a couple of filters for my 50mm, a few memory cards and the iPad camera kit. I don't exactly travel light, but it does all fit in a shoulder bag, with room to spare for keys, my wallet, glasses, etc. One other thing is that I keep a skylight/1A filter on my lenses all the time. Given that they're all 30+ year old glass, I try to protect them and optimise their colour rendition.

LX3

LX3

Decided this year for holiday to leave behind my big heavy DSLR and lenses and have some fun returning to a point and shoot rather than carry around big bags. (And yes, coped just with the realisation that I wouldn't be able to do my fave macro bug shots!). I had a really old little lumix which was past its best and well used and thought would be good to upgrade so can have a portable camera with lots of functionality on hand easily and be able to pop it into a bag where ever I go.

I ended up purchasing a 2nd hand Panasonic DMC-LX3 from ebay and also for some fun, I also got a Manfrotto Modopocket stand which was left on the camera throughout the holiday and came in handy lots. (I also got a little gadget that enables you to use a cable release for time lapse photos, but as yet, still not played with that)
An awesome little camera indeed, very responsive and fast. I did miss the viewfinder having to return to using a screen at the back of the camera though!
Overall - a perfect little companion for snapshots. Not a big zoom at all, and very wide, takes great pics in low light too.

I love the graphic novel genre and I read quite a few graphic novels each year.

Odd then that I was so 'in the zone' with my camera that I didn't venture inside for a look around ...

Wiladat Imam Hussain

Wiladat Imam Hussain

groups.msn.com/14MASUMEEN/yaalimadad.msnw

The Shias all over the world celebrate the birthday of Imam Hussain erstwhile grandson of our Holy Prophet .But a strange thought though the Shias celebrate the Willadat of Imam Hussain today they celebrate his Martyrdom everyday, celebrate in the context of mourning.
Yes every land is Karbala every Heart is Ashura.
I wanted to write this piece last night, but some how it was not ready for gestation, it did not happen while I sat at home posting my pictures at Flickr.
I have just opened shop, I was asking Asif Shakir my eldest son about some quote on Imam Hussain different from what we have read and he said go to ezoftech..
But I think I shall write through the guidance of my Heart .
I am not a hard core Shia at all, I keep harping about my Shiasm, that has been nascent, not aggressive, I lived in a cosmopolitan society with the Hindus, Christians Parsis Sikhs and people of diverse Faith.
For me my religion is something personal and not a badge stuck as an armband.
The Shia resurgence of my soul happened a few years back despite my wife and children being overtly and most importantly better Shias than me , but never did they exert their religiosity on my multi colored human camera like consciousness..
I dressed and did look , and do look , like a Hindu ascetic, this was my effervescent Sartorial Spirituality.
I dabbled in the stream of all religious thought but I am a Shia born and Shiasm is my birthright a nationalistic fervor connected to the fragrance of the land I live.
I do not wish to sound Shia , but one thought troubles me being a moderately liberal Indian Muslim, and it is not Anti Islam it is anti “anti Humanity.”
When the genocide and the carnage was happening at Karbala , and Imam Hussain not an unknown figure but the scion of the Holy Prophet should be so shabbily treated , shocks me of the kind of Muslims that lived within the fold of Yazidi Islam.
Not a single voice raised, not a protest, just silent acceptance of misdeeds, read my words carefully, and realize what I am applying to modern day protesting Islam.
Cartoon s of the Holy Prophet full throated protestations, justifiably so, Salman Rushdie, Taslima Nasrin, tattoos of the Holy Scriptures on the back of a Dutch model.. justifiably so yet the body of Islam.. souled in Saudi Arabia and fleshed out in other countries keeps silent at the continuous killing of Muslims by Muslims killing of other communities in the name of Islam..
What are we trying to prove ?
At Karbala the same situation existed in Islam?
Yazid may have thought he was justified in destroying the goodwill of Imam Hussain , he was no ideal Caliph, the first supreme Terrorist, he had his Jehad, and it continued unabated against the follwers of Ali the Shias.
Today Allah Ho Akbar surfed on the net, brings to you the sectarian Gospel of Hate.. hate for everything that is Shia Shiasm Shi Shiite ..?
So what has really changed, mind you I don’t borrow verses from scriptures to prove my point.
The Arab barbarism is the heritage of contemporary Islam ,kill kill, be counted in Paradise that is why the rogue Mullahs don’t want Muslims to educate themselves, and strange even the most educated Kafeel Ahmed lost out at the end of the day.
A man in Hyderabad says behead Taslima Nasrin, I am not shocked the majority followers of Islam justified beheading even in the days of Hazrat Ali and later his son Imam Hussain. There was no one to behead Yazid..
Imagine taking a sword and cutting of a mans neck while he was in prayers in the Mosque. Imagine on the hot and dusty sands of Karbala people who also prayed Namaz , fasted, followed the religion propagated by the Holy Prophet had no qualms in slaying his favorite Grandson or his family.
Yes the Shia is a better Islamist any day, whether he sheds blood , scourges himself, cuts his forehead all considered heresy, except killing of innocent people, kidnapping of Koreans, planting bombs in trains, 9/11 7/ 11 all these are pardonable for the greater glory of a marginalized Islam..
The Lal Masjid, Abdul Aziz is only a tip of the iceberg..
We have to wake up from our religiously flavored drug induced sleep..
Yes I have nothing more to say.. today I celebrate Wiladat e Imam Hussain
But Everyday is Ashura..Every land is Karbala ..

Hyderabad, A Home Away From Home

Hyderabad, A Home Away From Home

We skipped from the chaotic city of Delhi to Hyderabad. We spent a couple of days enjoying the creature comforts of the west at the home of Suneel's uncle, Subba Rao, and aunt, Pandu. Hot water, queen size bed, clean city, and wonderful family-cooked meals. We were overwhelmed by their generosity as well as their ability sneak food onto our plates when we were full -- good Indian hospitality.

We toured the old city center, temples, and the high tech city. The high tech city has really blossomed since Suneel was here 5 years ago. Bhaskar, a friend of Suneel's father, Rao, took us out nto dinner and on a driving tour of the city.

We also found time for some shopping. The outfit pictured is one of our finds -- Suneel's India Wife :-)

From Hyderabad, we took middle of the night flights out of India to Singapore, a city that is a drastic change from India. We will soon start our month-plus journey through southeast asia to China.

The India pictures have been uploaded with the tag "india" on Flickr. Not some our best camera work, since the screen to view the pictures is broken. Perhaps a new camera in Singapore will be purchased.

Canon EOS 30D speed test: 5FPS

Canon EOS 30D speed test: 5FPS

Here's an informal burst rate test on the Canon EOS 30D. 5 frames in 0.91 sec. Here's the math: T5 - T1 = 5:14.99 - 5:14.08 = 0.91 sec. Also T6 - T2 = 5:15.29 - 5:14.38= 0.91 sec. So how many in 1.00 sec? (1.00 sec/0.91 sec) X 5 frames = 5.49 frames. But... (T6 - T1)/6 = 0.20 sec/frame. Divide into 1.00 sec and you get 5.00 frames, just like the published data.

Timing detector

Overview of the timings from the detector. To simulate the ambient light one IR laser is set in continue mode. The signal level on the detector for this simulated light was about 65 ( right side diagram) the ADC has a range of 2.56V, so 65 means .65V or 650 mV. The left side of the diagram show where the second but now pulsed IR laser come in action. This pulsed light goes now to level 105 or 400 mV above the simulated ambient.

On the diagram you see also how long its take to transfert a data string via the SPI bus. This time is 1.83 usec to transfert one 8 bit ADC value. The total cycle time for 2 measurements is 65.35 usec. On the diagram you see also where the laser drive is on and off. The AVR controller runs on the internal clock of 8 MHz.
